Base Station Controller

The BSC, or Base Station Controller (in English, Controller Base Station) is one element of the GSM network. Its role is to order a number of BTS (up to several hundred). In turn, several BSC are connected to the upper hierarchy of the mobile network, mobile switching center (MSC).
The link between a BSC and MSC link called A, one between a BSC and BTS called Abis link (link to 2 Mbit).
If its part, BTS is responsible for the physical management of the radio link, the BSC will be the intelligent on this link: it is he who decides on the activation / déactivation a channel to a mobile station, which decides the power of issuance of BTS and MS and manages changes in cells (handover). If the handover takes place between two BTS which are linked to the same BSC, the latter carries out the handover alone (handover intra-BSC), otherwise it is an inter-BSC handover handover or inter-MSC which is call (x) mobile switching center (s) (MSC) higher (s).
To make the power control and changes in cell, the BSC collection and analysis measures of performance and quality sent by the BTS and MS.
Another key role of the BSC is to concentrate the flow of data from BTS. Apart from a dense urban areas, a BTS is rarely overloaded permanently, Abis is therefore somewhat saturated. By concentrating all the Abis on a smaller number of links A in the direction of the MSC, it allows better use of resources.
